Origin
The origins of the vibrator or “love egg”, “vibrating egg” remain debated, with no definitive historical consensus. Some sources trace it to ancient China or Myanmar, referencing its mention in the Ming Dynasty novel The Golden Vase of Plums(or Jingpingmei, “金瓶梅”) as an import from Burma. Depictions like the “Burmese Bell” (Fig. 1) lack clarity on gendered use, and its manual operation distinguishes it from modern electric vibrators.
Modern vibrators emerged in the 19th century: steam-powered massagers in the 1870s were marketed to treat female “hysteria,” while Dr. Granville’s 1880s battery-powered device aimed to relieve muscle pain but was later adopted for sexual use. By the early 1900s, electric massagers like the Hamilton brand became household staples until their association with adult films relegated them to taboo. They regained mainstream visibility in the 1960s. Claims of Japanese origins lack substantiation.
Structure
Egg-shaped and typically made of silicone, rubber, plastic, or metal, vibrators may be wired or wireless (Bluetooth-enabled). Wired versions include a retrieval string to prevent internal displacement.
Principle
